Alenka Jerkič graduated from the Faculty of Economics in Ljubljana in 1984. From 1986 to 1993, as an analyst and for the last two years as the Assistant Director of the Analysis and Research Department in the Bank of Slovenia, she published about ten articles, and established and then led the preparation of balance of payment statistics and statistics on international investments of the Republic of Slovenia. In 1994 she conducted the establishment of the Department of Financial Statistics at the Bank of Slovenia and afterwards served as the Director of this department for five years.
From 1999 to 2002 she was Head of the EU Affairs Unit at the Department of Macroeconomic Analysis and Public Finance and the Budget Department of the Ministry of Finance. During that time, among other things, she established debt and deficit statistics of Slovenia in accordance with the European System of National Accounts (ESA), designed and managed publications of the Public Finance Bulletin, and participated in the preparation of the Pre-Accession Economic Programmes.
From 2003 to 2017 she was a member of the Committee of Deputies of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC Alternates), responsible for the coordination of fiscal policies in the European Union, and took part in the work of the Economic and Financial Committee (a year and a half as a member) and the Council of Ministers for Economic and Financial Matters. From 2003 to 2010 and from 2014 to 2017 she was a member of the Committee of Financial Counsellors in the Council of Ministers of the European Union. Since their inception in 2010 and 2012 respectively until 2017, she was one of the Directors of the European Financial Stability Instrument (EFSF) and a deputy to the Slovenian member of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).
She was elected Member of the Fiscal Council on 21 March 2017.
